The Human Rights Act, PACE, RIPA and CPIA

Rules have been created to protect citizens from miscarriages of justice and in light of this have increased in complexity. The rules are designed to control the evidence that's allowed into the courtroom. But many of these rules are not directly applicable to the regulatory offences with which local authority enforcement officer typically encounter.

Therefore, in partnership with CIEH, our authors have also developed courses that are tailored to local authority enforcement; and which consider admissibility of evidence and the Code for Crown Prosecutors, investigation preparation, evidence gathering and how to focus on the facts that need to be proved. We are preparing a 1-Day Course as well as a Certificate Course. Both courses consider how to breakdown the elements of the offence into its component parts and how to decide when to interview suspects, who to interview, what to look for, how to decide what questions to ask as well and also how to explore defences. The Certificate Course would enable officers to present their own 'guilty plea' cases in the magistrate's courts.

Also covered are hearsay, witness statements, what should be covered in a statement, how to introduce exhibits, how to present your evidence to its best advantage, reducing exposure to cross examination by understanding how advocates scrutinise your case file and therefore how to produce a robust case file.
